Why Section 608 certification exists

Section 608 of the Clean Air Act controls work that could release covered refrigerants from stationary air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

EPA requires technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of covered equipment to pass an EPA-approved test. The credential is earned through an EPA-approved certifying organization and does not expire.

• Certification is connected to the work being performed, not merely a job title.
• The rule covers equipment containing ozone-depleting refrigerants and most substitutes, including HFCs.
